This past Thursday, former bassist of SONICFLOOd, Grant Norsworthy, joined us at VISIBLE SCHOOL to challenge us on our use of the word "worship". So many times we use it as an adjective - worship song, worship leader, worship set, worship time - or we are descriptive with the word saying such things as, "Worship was good," or "How did you like worship today?" All of these statements really referring to the musical style.
Grant challenged us to consider that the word is actually a verb - it is something we do, not a word to describe another action or noun. We all understand to some point that worship is bigger than the songs that we sing for 30 minutes on a Sunday morning. But to really live that is the great challenge. That our typing, our writing, our driving, our talking, even our breathing is to be worship. As Matt Redman says in one of His songs, "We are breathing the breath that You gave us to breathe to worship you."
There is nothing wrong with music - it is a beautiful medium for love songs to flow unto our Savior, Creator, and Father. And, hey, VISIBLE SCHOOL stands as a training base for such a medium of worship. But it's the challenge above all challenges that we look to see every aspect of our lives to be worship. And with a member of the Godhead dwelling inside of us, and with the reality that we have been made new creations in Christ, we have been given "everything pertaining to life and godliness" (2 Peter 1:3). So let us take up this challenge with humility but confidence in Him that He will be faithful to draw us more and more into the life of worship. We are destined for such! |
