This past week in Worship Leadership we've been doing this thing we call "Combined Sectionals."  In this hands-on time, bassists, drummers, and worship leaders come together to work on the mechanics of playing together as an ensemble.

We chose this combination of musicians to help work on the worship leader and rhythm section dynamic, emphasizing communication and spontaneous musical techniques.  Each student gets a chance to play in the band onstage, while others sit around the stage and have a listen to both the band and what the professors are presenting.

This week, we talked and played through some great musical basics; we tackled playing together as an ensemble (i.e. not overplaying), the role and possible scope and influence of each instrument within the sonic landscape, how to communicate (kindly) with each other, and of course, we encouraged students in playing in styles different from what comes naturally to them.  We worked through adapting worship songs from what we affectionately call the "Standard Worship Groove" into fresh expressions like funk, Brit pop, "four on the floor," and other variations.

These combined sectionals continue after Thanksgiving, and we have a few sessions coming up next semester.  I'll keep you posted as we go!
